Business Development Manager for Asia at the Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult

Ms. Shirley Lam is responsible for developing business and partnerships with advanced therapy companies and research institutes in Asia Pacific, as well as building the business strategy for this territory. Prior to joining the Catapult, Shirley spent five years developing innovation partnerships between the UK and Asia to facilitate joint R&D, knowledge transfer and trade in the health and technology sectors. She also worked on research projects in various labs in the UK and Hong Kong. Her expertise spans across research, business/partnership development, project management, technology transfer and marketing.
Shirley obtained her MSc in Infection and Immunity from University College London and BSc in Medical Biochemistry from King’s College London in the UK.

- 1997-2013 Head of Human Genome Analysis at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute; 2007-13 Head of Informatics; where he was one of the organisers of the sequencing of the human genome

Opening Speech

Simon Smith has been British Ambassador to the Republic of Korea since March 2018. He began his career in the Diplomatic Service in 1986, and has also worked at the British Embassies in Kiev, Vienna, Tokyo and Moscow. Simon is from Bristol, and studied German and French at Oxford University.

Opening Speech

- Harjinder joined the Civil Service following a private sector career of over 30 years within the global pharmaceutical industry, primarily with AstraZeneca PLC, where he held numerous senior roles. He is the Vice Chair of Sandwell & West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust and is also serving the Council of the University of Birmingham.
- In 2016 Harjinder founded Abnasia Ltd, an independent consulting firm specialising in providing commercial expertise to the global pharma industry and was engaged by many of the top pharma companies to assist them with their strategic commercial issues.
- Harjinder was offered the opportunity to join the Department for International Trade in 2019 to lead this vitally important area of the economy. The pace of innovation in the UK is staggering, and he is immensely proud to be supporting the healthcare, life sciences and bioeconomy sector. He and his team will do everything in their power to help UK companies and institutions achieve even greater success, both within the UK and abroad.
